Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.

Description:

Heart of Illinois Conference is a one day in depth art making conference where high school students choose classes they want to participate in. Senses, Sounds, & Sculpture explored art making using the different senses. Sight, Touch, & Sound were used to create a 3D piece.

Rational: Students successfully connected memories to personal culture, traditions, and history to influence their interpretation of personal responses to art.  They discussed the way they perceive art, linking it to at least one personal experience and sound. In class discussion, students explained how their memories or stories and personal response to touch, sight & sound are connected to a 3D sculpture that they created. Artists Nick Cave, Lucy Hardcastle, Sarah Sze, Monica Valentine were used to reference artists. Students used InShot to create a video of their artwork with sound. Students gained knowledge in presenting work in many facets and how perceptions of art change with different sound, music, and presentation.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
7M: articulates a logical rationale for the role of the visual arts in the school curriculum, including philosophical and social foundations for visual arts education.

My teaching philosophy involves creating a warm and safe environment for students to learn and express themselves. Exciting students about art, artists, creativity, and community is a central focus in my teaching. Creating a curriculum surrounding contemporary art and artists will guide students to relate personal experiences in a modern context. Teaching the artistic toolbox of skills, tool use, technology, and critique is vital in giving students the confidence to create and critically think. The combination of student choice and process-based learning is what I encompass in the art room.
